Pet Stains on Carpet? Here's What Actually Works (and What Doesn't)
If you have a dog or cat, you've probably been there — you walk into a room and know immediately something went wrong. Pet stains are one of the most common reasons Kansas City homeowners call us, and also one of the most mishandled.
What Most People Do Wrong
The first instinct is usually to scrub. Don't. Scrubbing pushes the stain deeper into the carpet fibers and can permanently damage the material. Instead, blot — always blot — with a clean cloth from the outside of the stain inward.
Another common mistake is using bleach or ammonia-based cleaners. Ammonia actually smells similar to urine to pets, which can encourage them to mark the same spot again.
What Actually Works for Fresh Stains
Blot up as much liquid as possible immediately
Apply a mixture of cold water and a small amount of dish soap
Blot again — never rub
Rinse with cold water and blot dry
Sprinkle baking soda once dry to absorb remaining odor
When Home Remedies Aren't Enough
If the stain has dried, soaked into the padding underneath, or if you're dealing with repeated accidents in the same area, home remedies won't fully eliminate the odor. The smell stays in the padding — which is below the carpet surface and impossible to reach without professional equipment.
This is where enzyme-based professional cleaning makes the difference. At Clean Co KC, we use products specifically designed to break down the proteins in pet waste at a molecular level — eliminating both the stain and the odor for good.
We serve Olathe, Overland Park, Leawood, and the entire KC Metro. Call 816-795-7898 to book a pet stain treatment today.
